Panama Hat

What Is Panama Hat

This type of hat is one of the most famous and most popular by public icons. The Panama hats have their origin in Ecuador and are known by various names such as jipijapa or toquilla. This last one is derived from the hats that the Spaniards wore during the conquest. Therefore, an authentic Panama refers to a material and not a form of hat. As tradition dictates, this type of hat is made from the braided leaves of the carludovica palmata or toquilla straw. This causes that their hand weaving requires a skill and a raw material that makes them unique in the world.

Advantages of Panama Hat
01/

You get uv radiation protection
One of the main perks of floppy hats is their capability to block dangerous uv radiation. Most floppy hats are somewhat made from tightly woven fabrics or even materials with a high ultraviolet protection factor (upf). Upf measures a proper fabric’ s ability to block uv radiation, and a hat having a higher upf provides you with superior protection. By wearing a floppy sun hat, you form up an additional barrier between your skin and even the sun, dropping uv exposure and minimalizing the risk of sun-related skin conditions.

02/

You experience comprehensive sun coverage
Floppy hats provide you with brilliant coverage for the face, neck, and even shoulders, offering a shield against direct sunlight. Contrary to tinier brimmed hats or caps, floppy hats include wide brims that extend all around, offering utmost shade to delicate areas vulnerable to sunburn and skin damage. This comprehensive coverage reduces the risk of sunburn and even drops the chances of developing skin cancers.

03/

Experience eye protection
Apart from shielding your face and neck, floppy hats even get you brilliant protection for your eyes. Prolonged exposure to uv rays can end up in various eye problems, including macular degeneration, cataracts, and pterygium. The wide brim of floppy hats aids you in reducing the amount of direct sunlight reaching your eyes, reducing the strain on your eyes and lowering the danger of these conditions. For people who may wear glasses or contact lenses, floppy hats can definitely be specifically advantageous as they minimize glare and boost visual comfort.

04/

Quite fashionable and versatile
Apart from their functional and practical benefits, floppy hats have turned out to be a fashionable accessory. With a huge range of styles, colour, and even materials available, floppy hats can definitely complement various of your outfits and personal styles. Their versatility makes them apt for a diversity of occasions, such as outdoor events, beach trips, gardening, or everyday wear. By blending style and sun protection, floppy hats boost individuals like you to prioritize your skin’ s health without compromising on chic.

Construction of Panama Hat

The two main processes in the creation of a Panama hat are weaving and blocking. The two most common types of weaves are the cuenca and brisa. The cuenca weave has the appearance of a herringbone pattern and utilizes slightly more straw than the brisa weave. The brisa weave has the appearance of small diamonds/squares. This type of weave is less intricate but perceived as finer than the cuenca weave by some as it is lighter. Other types of weaves include the crochet, fancy, torcido, and new order.

The quality of a Panama hat is defined by the tightness of the weave. The fine weave of the hat was ideal for protection against the tropical sun. Historically, to measure the tightness of the weave, a simple square tool that looks like a picture frame was used. The aperture of this frame was 25 mm, or about 1 inch. The regulator would set this frame one inch from the edge of the hat's brim edge, and then count the peaks of the cross weaves, called carerra, moving in a parallel direction. The tighter the weave, the more carerras were counted. That number would be multiplied by two and reconciled against a grading chart. A highly refined grade 20 would consist of 16 carerras.

The price of these hats depends on the time and quality that a weaver put in to the hat. A master weaver could take as long as eight months to weave a single hat. Weavers could sell a single hat to buyers for US$200. Once the hat is sold to a buyer it then would pass through more people who would "finish the brim, shape it, remove imperfections, bleach the straw, and add interior and exterior brands.

What’s the Best Panama Hat Style for Your Face Shape?

We each have one of six basic face shapes: oval, round, oblong, square, triangle, or heart. Have a look here to see how to find your shape, then read on to find out how to pick your perfect Panama! The oval and triangle are the most versatile face types. Women with these face shapes can pull off most styles of Panama hats, needing only to ensure the hat suits their outfit. Men with oval or triangle face shapes are equally blessed, although the Fedora is always the best choice. The only caveat for triangle faces is to ensure the hat balances your shoulder line and that the crown is narrower than your cheekbones.

Also versatile is the heart shape but avoid large or wide brims as they’ll accentuate your forehead and narrow your chin. Wearing your hat slanted slightly forward will slim your face and draw attention to your eyes. A medium brim is a winner for heart-shaped faces as it’ll balance out your forehead width. Your main goal with a round face is to distract from the curves and ‘slim’ your face. Avoid hats with round crowns as they’ll have the opposite effect. Instead, pick a hat with a high crown and straight brim to give your face a more angular appearance. Worn at a slant, will also draw out your face and add some definition.

Conversely, square faces benefit greatly from circular styles as they soften the facial edges. Round crowns and brims are ideal for this, tricking the eye into seeing a more rounded face. Square faced women can really benefit from wide brims and round crowns. It can add an air of flirty femininity. Overall, ‘squares’ should avoid brimless or short-brimmed hats or any kind of square styles, as they emphasize their angular face shape. A slight tilt breaks up the squareness and adds a touch of chic. An oblong face is a long face, and so the endgame is to look stylish whilst tricking the eye into shortening the face. Obviously avoid any hats with tall crowns and short brims as they will only elongate your facial features more. Man or woman, the flared or wide brim is your ally, especially when coupled with a low crown. A wide brimmed Fedora will counterbalance vertical curves and help to offset a long face whilst a cloche style worn low to the eyebrows will create the impression of a shortened face.

How to Buy a Panama Hat

1.Get your size right

What no-one will tell you is that all panama hats will shrink. How much they shrink depends on the weave, and how it is used. Thousands of people have walked into our stores wearing a panama hat that is too small. It is uncomfortable, unflattering and likely to blow down the street. Ideally, you order a hat 1cm bigger than your actual size and insert a spacer to make it fit well until it shrinks. Your hat order will ship with a packet of spacers and instructions, ensuring you have a perfect fit. If it is a little large, you can easily adjust it, but small is like tight shoes - uncomfortable.Measuring your head is easy. Place a string or tape measure around your head above your ears, where you would wear your hat. Please write it down and then measure it again. When you place your order, I will follow up and confirm your sizing - 99% of the time it will be perfect.

2.Avoid the fakes & cheapies

Any and every hat online is called a panama, which makes things tricky. People often visit our stores wearing a paper or plastic hat, heart broken that they bought a fake panama. Most of the panamas online are either 'paper straw' or 'polypropylene'. They're like wearing a rubber cap, making you hot, sweaty and very uncomfortable in the sun. The easiest way to tell if it is a handwoven panama is to look at the centre of the top. If the straw spirals out like the photo, then it is the real deal. If it is square, then it is not a panama. The world is full of cheap tourist panama hats. When you look around online, they will pop up everywhere and seem like a great deal, but these are the hats to avoid. They won't last long, their quality will be terrible and they will look crappy very fast. Like most things, you get what you pay for. It is like the cut of a suit, the lines of a dress or quality shoes. There is complex engineering and design that goes into making a hat look good. Discount shippers from ecuador don't have style, and don't wear panama hats. It's like buying a designer suit from ecuador - your odds of success are very slim.

3.Hat grades & quality

Weavers split the panama straw using their long thumbnails. Each time they divide it, the quality of the hat doubles, and so does the time it takes to weave. The longer it takes, the more expensive the hat becomes. Some hats are thread fine and can take a master weaver six months to finish, some take two hours. Every manufacturer has a different grading system. People get fixated on threads per inch, when that is far less important than the consistency, finish or style. A good hat is much more than the grading.

How to Care and Repair Your Panama Hat
Men's Panama Straw Hat

Handling

The biggest mistake that people make when handling a panama hat is pinching it by the crown; the oil from your fingertips can weaken the fibres over time, causing them to split and fray. Always pick up your hat using the inside of the crown and support the brim carefully. When resting your hat on a flat surface, place it facing up (crown down) or, make sure the brim is elevated and supported to maintain its brim shape.

Cleaning

Avoid oil, ink, cream or any other semi-permanents likely to stain your panama hat. If you do get something on your panama hat, try to remove it as quickly as possible before it has time to absorb into the fibres. Spot clean using a damp cloth with mild soapy water or a wet wipe using gentle strokes following the grain of the fibers. Be sure not to rub the stain further into the weave. Lay flat in a well-ventilated area and reshape it as it dries. Do not use chemical cleaners as this may stain and cause discolouration.

Reshaping

Over time, a panama hat may need to be reshaped. To restore hats to their original best shape, use the steam from an iron or clothes steamer to carefully reshape a crushed hat. Be careful not to over-steam or the entire hat can lose its shape. Position the steamer about 5 cm away and steam the outer and inner sections until the weave is slightly damp and soft. Gently stuff the crown with plain acid free tissue paper to fill out to the desired shape and leave it in a well-ventilated place to dry with the crown and brim supported. If you do need to straighten the brim of your hat, you can iron it on a very low heat with a cloth between the iron and the hat to prevent the delicate fibres of the hat from burning.

Storing

Shop our collection of hat boxes here, or follow these simple tips to ensure your hat stays in pristine condition when you’re not using it. Store your hat in a box or on a clean surface. Make sure the hat is in a ventilated space away from direct light and moisture. If you’re not using a hatbox with a support, make sure the crown is supported by stuffing it with acid free tissue paper. Note: Avoid printed or coloured paper as it may transfer onto your hat over time. Ensure the brim is not pressed against any hard surfaces. The key here is to ensure your brim keeps its shape and doesn’t sink down or flatten. If your hat is rollable, don’t keep it rolled for prolonged periods of time as this will make it harder to get the creases out.

How to Find the Right Size Panama Hat?

If you are not sure what your hat size is, please follow these simple instructions to find your size. Measure your head at the level you would want the hat to sit when you are wearing it. This can vary a little according to your personal preference, but normally it would be across the middle of the forehead, pass a thumb’s width above your ears and around the widest part of the back of your head. Use a tape measure or a piece of string to find your size in centimetres.

Once you have the measurement in centimetres, this should be the hat size for you. You may wish to move up or down one size if you like a particularly loose or tight fit. If you know your hat size in a different measuring system, please use the following conversion chart to convert it to our sizing. If you are buying the hat as a gift, as a starting point we find that our most popular ladies size is 57, for gentlemen it’s a size 59.
